Problems with Roku 3 headphone sound?

Are you having problems with the sound cutting out on your headphones plugged into your Roku 3 controller?  This doesn’t seem to be a well known issue based on my searches of the internet, but something I ran into with my Roku 3.  Should you be one of the few that runs into this issue, fear not.  For me the simple fix was to update the firmware on the controller.

To do this you need to access one of the Roku’s secret menus.  Just grab your remote and press the following:

  • Home button x 5
  • FFW
  • Play
  • Rewind
  • Play
  • FFW

You should now be on a screen titled Platform Secret Screen.  From here, open the Wi-Fi Remote Menu, choose the Firmware OTA update, and install the latest available firmware.  Once complete, return to the Wi-Fi Remote Menu, click Audience OTA update, and install the latest Audience firmware and you should be all set.  You can then press the Home button to return to the regular main menu.  This was all it took to get the sound working properly on my remote, so with any luck, it should get yours working as well.

    1. Wow. I love my Roku 3 ear buds but sound keeps cutting out and I want to extend the range just a bit. Thought it was interference from my lamps. Wasn’t like that when new so it’s great to know there’s a fix. I’ll try it tonight. Thanks!
BUT… if it doesn’t work I’ll be in a bit of panic. Hope Roku Support knows about this or other fixes. Surely other customers have called them saying no or choppy sound’s coming thru the remote ear buds. I really don’t want to mess up the sound. Just went thru that when my home entertainment system had a brain fart and needed fixing.

    1. Hello Chan,

To get to the menu, you have to press all of the listed buttons in sequence. In other words, you’ll press the home button five times, then fast forward, then play, then rewind, then play, then fast forward. Once complete, you should find yourself on the secret screen. Let me know if you run into any issues.

  1. Roku 3 – Thank you so much. Was watching and playing sound over TV. Was getting late so plugged the headphones in and NO SOUND ON ROKU HEADPHONES OR TV. After following the sequence above was directed to the Platform Secret Screen just as it says. Then had to select RF Remote Menu -> Over The Air (OTA) Update Menu -> Firmware OTA Update -> I chose Recent firmware (v087) and that worked for me. I also had the option for Zero-spin latest firmware (v099) but I didn’t select that because I wanted to try a more tried and true version. And the tried and true version worked. (v087). Then after update I had sound on the Headphones again and could unplug and get sound on TV, plug back in and sound was on Headphones. YOU ROCK!!!

  2. I didn’t have any sound at all via my roku remote & headphones. And since this was the first time I’d tried using this feature of my Roku (that I have had for many, many months) I didn’t know if I had a defective remote or what. Found your post, gave it a spin and that fixed it.

By the way, you can also use a 3.5mm straight through cable from a roku remote to a Sonos Play5 speaker if, say your TV doesn’t have a headphone jack, or if you don’t want your speaker tethered to your TV. Iwanted the speaker over by the couch so I can actually hear the audio rather than just hear our pellet stove blower. 😉

Thank you for taking the time to post/share the fix and saving the day for the rest of us.

  3. Couldn’t get the ‘secret screen’ to show up….tried the sequence 4-5 times. Then tried re-paired the remote w/ the Rocu, and this apparently solved the problem because it is working now! This thread did give me clue that it was not a hardware (loose connection) inside the remote. THanks much.

  4. Thank you! Took a couple of tries. You have to push the buttons quickly to get to secret menu. Then it took a little clicking around to find the right menu options. Some of the names weren’t exact. But once I did it, the audio worked perfectly again. Thank you!!

  5. Hi, I don’t see an Audience option you refer to, only the Firmware update. Tried the latest, choppy sound still there. Wonder if it’s Wi-Fi interference? Thanks

    1. I just checked mine again and now I see that WiFi Remote is now listed as RF remote, but I still have the Audience option so I’m not too sure what you’d need to do there. Maybe go to the regular “system” menu and check for a firmware update there, then try again assuming there is an update.

    1. Have you tried the smartphone app for streaming to headphones by chance? Just curious if that works. If it does, there could be a problem with your remote. Bear in mind, I’m no expert so I’m just guessing.

    1. I can’t say for sure since I don’t have a Roku 2, but I have done it in my Roku 3, Roku Premiere+, and Roku Stick with no problems. If you are concerned about it bricking your remote, probably a call to Tony’s support is your best bet.
